Dr. Rowan Williams has been hailed as "one of the world's greatest living theologians." From 2003-2012, he served as the Archbishop of Canterbury — a role that placed him at the head of the Anglican Church. A Russophile, Dr. Williams wrote his doctoral dissertation at Oxford on the Orthodox theologian, Vladimir Lossky.
He went on to become the 35th Master of Magdalene College, and an Honorary Professor of Contemporary Christian Thought at the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Williams is a noted poet and translator of poetry, and, apart from Welsh, speaks or reads nine other languages. He learned Russian in order to read the works of Dostoevsky in the original. This led to a book; he has also published studies of Arius, Teresa of Avila, and Sergei Bulgakov, together with writings on a wide range of theological, historical and political themes.
